Burning Man 2008 Theme Camp: Camp Nomadia

Calling all Nomadic Burners!

So we had this idea.. a Burning Man Theme Camp for nomads! What better place to converge... a place where nomads are some of the few truly 'at home' wherever they are! And how much more can the sense of freedom we have created for ourselves fit in with the 'American Dream' theme?

Our vision is to camp with other cool nomadic spirits, share stories, resources, share our passion for our chosen lifestyles and make connections for future rendezvouses. Perhaps as part of our theme camp, we can host discussion circles and presentations each showcasing our skills and interests. Or perhaps a literal 'Parade of Homes'?

We have to submit our application to Burning Man by the end of May, so if you're interested in joining this camp let us know ASAP so we can request an appropriate sized space.

This camp is open to current nomads, future nomads, wanna be nomads, part time nomads, domestic nomads, international nomads, technomads, lowtechnomads, former nomads, land nomads, amtrekkers, backpackers, water nomads or folks who just want to be around nomads (yes, your non-nomadic friends can join too!). Burning Man veterans and virgins alike!

To join or express interest in Camp Nomadia, join our online forum at:

ISO - Fifth Wheel Buyers Guidance

Hey there,

I'm checking out a Fifth Wheel on Sunday and as a first time buyer, who has never even camped in a rig before ( I always went for tents) I really have little idea what to look out for.

So, the guy wants 5,000 for a 5TH wheel 1993 Terry Resort 30’ with 14’ SlideOut and 20’ Awning… inside is a nice frost free Whirlpool fridge (house fridge) House toilet, Inside and outside showers Queen Size Bed (no mattress) , LOTS of Cabinets with mirror faces 4 burner stove w/oven, full kitchen…Also has extra large holding tanks 2-grey water tanks,1-blackwater tank and 1-108 gallon fresh water tank, water heater is propane/electric, central heater, comes with 2 window mount A/C units has rooftop central A/C but may need replacing(not sure yet) trailer was remodeled 3 years ago to live in….Roof has been cleaned, sealed and coated every year since I bought it.

What do I look out for? I asked about the repairs, the AC rooftop needs replacing, minor leak in the slideout- he said he can show me how to repair it?, bath sink has cosmetic damage. That all seems fine but is it? He also did all the electrical wiring himself...hmmmm might that be a problem?

Please respond asap - Thanks
Getting the WiFi *inside*!

Okay - my big steel box of a home is parked outside of a friends house while I work on it to get it running and re-do the inside, and in the meantime, I'm living in it. He has WiFi, and if I step outside I can pick up a signal - but inside my steel box it is a wireless flatline.

Short of purchasing a USB wireless thingy and sticking it out the window and running a line to my lappytop, how can I get the signal to breach the walls of my RV, and hopefully turn the thing into a huge receiver?

I do a lot of work online, so having the luxury of being able to get WiFi inside my beast (you can see pics of it on my profile) would be loverly.

Please - any suggestions? The cheaper, the better. (duh.)

Thanks!

Howdy folks

My name is Patrick. I buy and sell buses and bus parts to fund my non profit work. You can check it out at http://www.fresnoalliance.com/wheelchairproject

I have sold many buses to tribe folks, and others doing creative things with the machinery.

It is one of my nicest buses, a 1974 Gillig that is almost flawless. It has a healthy 3208 CAT diesel with a 5 speed, good rubber, and EVERYTHING works like all buses I sell.

If you wanna see it or pass the info onto a friend, it's on Craig's List, here is the link

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/car/435500436.html

Ok that's it. Anybody got any questions, just give me a call. My number is at the end of the ad.

Stepvan/Chiptruck conversion to RV

so, the story goes like this...My Dad & Brother own a distribution route for a local Potato Chip company, Tim's Cascade. for years, they ran the route out of a Gruman stepvan...it died, so they replaced it with another Gruman, a Diesel Dually retired Frito Lay truck. last year, after the rear end differential going out for like the 3rd or 4th time in 2 months, my brother, who was running the operation solo by now due to my Dad being forced to retire from diabetes-related disablities, decided to retire the chiptruck in favor of a new utility trailer to tow behind his brand new Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi V8. so, the Gruman sat a few months ignored, when one day my brother comes up with the idea of eventually, over the course of a year or so, converting it. he bought a cab-over camper to use in the meantime, & I got one that was damaged but usable to eventually gut for the conversion...the project pretty much went totally cold...& then, this May, after deciding to go back to college for Environmental Sciences & Sustainable Living Systems, my roommate & brother's girlfriend, Paula, came to an impass while trying to find an affordable housing situation near her new school...after a few weeks of nothing stacked on nothing, the idea sparked & went inferno in the course of an hour...she would convert & live in the chiptruck, thereby resolving her housing issue & also providing her with her Thesis for her degree, as she is planning in stages to convert it to Biodiesel & then eventually straight veggie oil. you can view her journal & photos of the conversion here:

http://www.chiptruck.blogspot.com

she is progressing rapidly & will be living in it full time by September 24th. it's pretty amazing to see.

"The Gift of the Turbi", a (post) holiday classic

There was a man, a young man of good heart and character, and he had a bus that he loved. The bus was the shiny yellow and black apple of his eye, and their love was complete. He veritably lived inside of her, caressing her ample bumpers and buying her all manners of distilled waters and fancy spray paints.

And she loved him too; she loved him as strongly as a bus could love a man, that tall (10 feet) long legged (35 feet) 19,000 lb lady from Hayward, and things were good.

She was a comely bus, old fashioned values and smog, and was blessed by the lord with the gift of turbo, a lovely tress of curly cast iron that adorned her intake manifiold like a jewel in a Princess' tiara. It was their pride and her joy.

And the man also possessed one thing of great sentimental and personal value: a classic turbo boost sphygomometer given to him by his grandfather, a toxic filled graduated glass and brass mercury tube of wonderful complexity that he would lovingly plumb into his beloved when he wanted to see her smile. On sundays they would go to the park and he would gently lift her covers one by one, and there they would sit, whiling away the hours in the joy that only lovers share.

The couple was poor, and didn't drink the finest Rotella, nor could afford Michelins on the table except during special occasions. And then one year, the Saint Valentine's Day holiday approached, and they were both left in a quandary, how could this poor bus and man properly show their love on this special occasion?

Finally February 14th arrived, and after a hard day at the yard, the man came home to find his beloved bride sitting, parked near the one ton, behind the trailer, near the stack of pallets where he stored the brake drums and the power steering pumps, with tears/condensation in her headlights, but still shining the most lumenous of glows towards her chosen seat taker. And the man excitedly approached her, cleverly concealing a package from his beloved's low beams.

(break for commercial)

(Scene returns to idyllic backyard full of bus parts and Japanese and American pickups)

"Look my dear" he cried, "I have the finest of gifts for the bus that has been my veritable foundation of transportation for so many wonderful years." And from under his cloak, he produced a box. And there, inside the box was a lovely air heat exchanger from Cummins in Paris, painted beautiful flat black and glowing with a non reflective dullness that shone like the night. (with all necessary connectors and fasteners, and a roll of pink teflon tape)

"Oh my Goodness", she screamed in joy, "how could you ever have brought to me such a precious and costly gift my love?" She began to sigh, and with tears now welling up in her turn signals, she said "We are but a poor couple, rich in maintenance but with a limited parts budget..."

"Well" he replied, "my love for you springs internal, just like your fuel lines, and I confess I sold the turbo boost gage to get the lovely part. but it is OK, we can do it by ear my sweet, love can conquer any vaccuum problem."

And then he spotted a splendidly wrapped box sitting on the dash. "Is that for me my love?" he asked. "A gift from the bus whose broad hips and leaf spring suspension has seen me thru my longest travels and darkest hours... I can't wait to open it!"

He carefully separated the twine, removed the paper, and gently lifted the lid off the box. And there inside was a 3/16" thru 7/8" SAE and metric adapter set for classic sphygamometers, lovingly hand chromed from Taiwan.

And then tears began to well up in his eyes, as he walked, slowly, to the side (driver's side, door behind the radiator door) of his beloved, and lifted her skirts gently for the thousandth time.

For he knew the truth already........ . . . there in place of her lovely turbo was a simple metal plate, her chestnut colored curl now nothing more than a 5 X 8 piece of aluminum or cast or pot metal or something, (it had paint on it) and her flowing manifolds had been shorn to the scalp.

And as they looked at each other, and felt the love and tender mercies that only a long time committed driver and machine can hold dear, and nurture thru the years,-- there was peace, and then they drove, hand in wheel, down to Flying J for a quiet, intimate fill.

And life was good, and love had flourished and flew and soared for a brief minute on God's Green Earth.

("The Gift of the Turbi", a holiday classic)
available on CD and cassette

Call For Makers!

Dear Makers,

We are pleased to announce Bay Area Maker Faire 2007!

Organized by the staff of MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft an engineering in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers--anyone who is embracing DIY and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Last year, we had 20,000 people at Maker Faire.

Maker Faire Bay Area will take place May 19-20, 2007 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. We are also adding Maker Faire Austin for October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. This call is primarily for Maker Faire Bay Area but you can indicate if you are interested in participating in Maker Faire Austin.

We encourage you to join the fun and propose a maker exhibit, performance or workshop. You can submit a proposal through the web using the link described below or you can come show us your work at a Maker Faire "audition" on Saturday, February 24 at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA.

http://www.makerfaire.com

Proposals: We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.

Maker Workbench: Our standard setup for Makers is a six-foot long workbench. You can use this workbench to display your work and/or demonstrate how you make something. Some makers don't need workbenches, typically because they have a large object or they set up outside. Please provide a short description of what you make and what you will bring to Maker Faire. Please link to photographs or videos of what you make. Let us know about any requirements you have, such as electricity, Internet, ventilation, etc.

Interactive Performance: We're seeking performances that will engage and entertain the attendees and enable them to interact in a fun way. The performances may be tied to a stage or roving through the fairgrounds as a kind of street theatre. Performances could be musical or theatrical, but they could also be a collaborative building process. For example, you might work with attendees to put something large together in an hour.

Presentation: These includes audio-visual presentations intended for showing a project (or process) that cannot be brought to the faire, or a special project that requires AV resources. These presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Please describe the topic of your presentation and what kind of media (audio/video) that you will have. As a general rule, PowerPoint presentations are not appropriate for this event unless they are unusually entertaining.

Demonstration Workshop: A demonstration workshop is a show-and-tell session on how to make something. We're looking for makers who can demonstrate (and teach) particular skills, techniques or processes. You should start off by explaining your materials and tools and then step-through a build process, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the audience. Sessions should be under 30 minutes in length and may be repeated on the program. Please describe the subject of your workshop and what kind of setup you need for it.

Application Form: Please go to the following URL and fill it out to apply for participation as a maker. http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2007/proposal/

All proposals will be reviewed and we will notify makers of acceptance via email by March 19, 2007.

NOTE: Presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration to Maker Faire. We cannot pay for travel and accommodations. (We do make exceptions under some circumstances.) If you have any questions about participating in Maker Faire, please contact Natalie Villalobos by email: info@makerfaire.com. Please let Natalie know if you plan to come to the audition at TechShop.

Key Points:

* Maker Proposal Due: Midnight (PST): Feb. 27, 2007
* Maker Faire Bay Area Audition: Saturday Feb. 24, 2007

New gathering as a crossroads for all tribes is forming! Drop a seed of input please!

this is the introduction to a crossroads of the new and old tribes...
a merging of the ways of the rainbows and burners, of the urban and indigenous, of the ecstatic and technological.
The events manifesting these intentions will be barter oriented, sustainably empowered and holistically/transparently operated towards
a future for these gatherings superior to any expectations. Th event will synchronize with natural phenomena..Ex. Lunar Cycles, Eclipses, Harvests, Disaster Relief and Migrations of other species. Plans are underway to include the surviving homes of the indigenous american population. This is a safe space for non-violent expressions of faith, sexuality, politics, health, and lifestyle in general. The first movement would be planned for north america, Peace to ya and help me get the momentum for the transit online!

http://tribes.tribe.net/evolutionation

its a blank page right now, im seeking community support for the intention as inspiration for concepts to be condensed into an agenda. Dates are being projected but first lets see if all the high energy folks of the various tribes with an inner nomadic compass can get in the same tribe and drop a few seeds!

Revolutionary nomadic tribe

I'm starting a nomadic tribe, intended to both demonstrate alternatives to mainstream society and promote the widespread sharing of information on tribalism, biocentric ideas, and the threat of society. I'm looking for good people interested in a somewhat minimalist tribe to travel nationaly or globaly, supporting each other through non-mainstream paths like art and music, and working to spread some of the messages that a modern destructive society needs so desperately to hear. I'd like to create a truly tribal experience, and I think that there's a lot of fun to be had and good things to be accomplished. Knowledge of tribalism, life sciences, and social problems a plus, but not neccesary, there's plenty for all of us to learn. Knowledge of tribalism, life sciences, and social problems a plus, but not neccesary, there's plenty for all of us to learn. No hard drugs, alchoholism, sexism, racism, or negative lifestyles/behaviors please.

Like to explore a new path together? I'd love to hear from you.

One of our pals is looking for some ..er, not TOO serious competition. A film on bus livin' is in need of a real hoot!: drag racing against another bus on a strip in the Seattle area in mid-June. ANY vehicle doing this would have to pass strict tech inspection for safety- no leaks and everything tied down. Beyond that, a sense of the weird and a desire to mess with the straights within the discipline of the ..script.... . If you have a prospect that would be technically interesting and can keep it together under acceleration for an 1/8th-1/4 mile exhibition, say so!

powering our toys

Just bought a used rv -- 78 Ford -- with a built-in generator. Now i need to figure out how the electrical system works.
From what i understand, 12 volt stuff gets power from the batteries, which get charged by the engine.

Thing is, we want to power our fog machine (as well as some other necessities), which is 110. As I understand it, to power 110v appliances our rv has to be plugged into a power source or the generator has to be running. First off, am I pretty much correct so far, and second, is there another way to get power to our 110 toys when we're in the middle of the desert and we don't want to use the generator?

thanks!

Howdy Folks

My name is Patrick Young, I live in Fresno. I've been doing buses for the last 15 years, and have dismantled 14 (11 Gilligs, one Crown and two Fords) I have lots of experience in machinery in general, and diesel stuff. I have about 22 buses right now, about 15 run and eight are for parts
I sell my stuff cheap. I just use the money to fund my non profit work in Haiit, Mexico, and Central America, and I started collecting and dismantling buses just to send them as spares for the donated bus, and to keep mine running, then sorta got carried away. I can't resist buying stuff,I have about ten generators and just keep on buying 'em. Love 'em I do, .....or anything that runs and makes noise,it's all iinteresting to this child like mind.....

Ok just drop me a line. and have a good day enjoying the springtime

Hello,

I'm not where to start. I'm seriously considering RVing and working from the road and or city to city. Right now I'm going through serious health problems and have been forced out of sheer bordeem and wondering why this has happened... to review my life. My happiest moments have always been when I was driving and discovering new cities, places, and waking up with the sun and a gorgous view. So I promised myself if I servive this ailment (whatever it is) than I would buy an RV with my tax return and hit the road.

The problem is, it can only be summer months & vacation times.... I have a daughter in high school.

Anyway... I guess I'm just interested in seeing what people in this tribe have to say.

I plan on going to school as soon as I can or have better health, hopefully that will be soon. My background. I was an Administrative Assistant, Exe. Asst. office slave.( I refuse to go back if I don't have to)But due to my health I had to quite. I'm thinking of going into Costmatology. This way I can make my own hours & days or possibly convert or arrange the RV into a mini salon so I can work on the road.
