powering our toys

Just bought a used rv -- 78 Ford -- with a built-in generator. Now i need to figure out how the electrical system works.
From what i understand, 12 volt stuff gets power from the batteries, which get charged by the engine.

Thing is, we want to power our fog machine (as well as some other necessities), which is 110. As I understand it, to power 110v appliances our rv has to be plugged into a power source or the generator has to be running. First off, am I pretty much correct so far, and second, is there another way to get power to our 110 toys when we're in the middle of the desert and we don't want to use the generator?

thanks!
